A quick sketch depicting Cregneish, a small village on the Isle of Man about a mile from where my sister lives. Whilst lived in, the whole village is also a museum, most of the buildings having thatched roofs.
The place is very quaint, but very difficult to capture in drawings. This is one of my first sketches utilising a similar drawing style to that which I use on my figure drawings, just to see what would emerge, using a graphite stick on 150gsm cartridge.
I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...

With such sensitivity and skill you capture the charm of this quaint, old world village in these drawings!
Paul Davenport replied:
Thats very kind :-) - my sister keeps wanting me to move there (close-by so she can pester me) ... very expensive for what you get - but guess you pay for the view and uniqueness... and the view is rather cool :-)

Wonderful sketchwork. You have a great talent The Isle of Man must be an interesting country sandwiched between Ireland and England. I heard it was an independent country.
Wendy Brunell
After a really hard day you are a treat to read, Paul :)
Paul Davenport replied:
I sometimes leave myself notes... the doctor said I shouldn't... but what the heck! Interesting you call this detailed work... I wouldn't personally call anything I just rub with my fingers 'detailed'... I didn't count the blades of grass or anything!... didn't draw the strange local that just came and stood looking at me for fifteen minutes, grinning like Goofy !!! (a bit scary... no way was I going to talk to him!)
Wendy Brunell
Love this, your work is beautifully done, such soft and lovey detailed work..
Paul Davenport replied:
Happy you like it Wendy... actually felt vey awkward doing it. I it was really cold... and had to do it standing up... not ideal... I like to find somewhere to park my butt!
Veronica Rickard
I'll believe you.....thousands wouldn't.

I went with some friends and saw the Laxey Wheel and climbed Snaefel, I mostly remember the rain :)
Paul Davenport replied:
Well!!! … it is in the UK…. what can one expect? Ha! The weather is very localised generally over there (honest) as its quite a small island. My sister lives down south where it's not very hilly and it hardly ever rains (honest).

I went to the Isle of Man in my teens and early twenties, and this is so atmospheric, it really takes me back, lovely.
Paul Davenport replied:
Hi Veronica. I don't think it will have changed much from what you remember! It is stuck in a time loop somewhat…….. generally quite a lot of housebuilding has been going on, but even so, it hasn't effected things much! My sister has an allotment here in Cregneish, just to the left of the white building on the left!
John Alexander
Your pencil work is quite inspiring.
Paul Davenport replied:
Thats nice to hear John! I suppose I should try taking the drawing further, but had a problem transferring the drawing style I use on my figures to landscapes, for obvious reasons, and didn't really know how to approach it…… I think I may persevere, as there is no reason why the island in the background is not just a quick smudge!
