This "Embryonic III" drawing is the third in the Embryonic series - an ongoing exploration of exploring and capturing the energy of the stroke with the marks I make, whilst exploring light and shade.
Drawn with charcoal and compressed charcoal onto A2 Daler Rowney Fine Grain Heavyweight 200gsm paper.
I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...

So beautiful. Her position feels like serenity and comfort and the movement around her makes me feel like I can sense her breathing. :-) Maggie

No surprise that the act of drawing has become “stressful“ ...the amount of restraint required to achieve the softness of movement of...a breath...suspended in utter Silence...Is palpable...but, for the viewer, It melts into its Beauty...your drawing has the same effect as the violin Strains in the hands of young Han Bihn...until one sees the shredded strings and one realizes the mastery of his Aesthetic...and one finally EXHALES! I have added you to my watchlist so as not to miss another upload. LF

SPECTACULAR, Paul!...the whispers of the charcoal’s breath...on the subject...EXQUISITE! LF

Your amazing ability to depict light, shadow, texture and energy is awesome. L/G
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you very much for the compliment:-)... I guess I feel my drawings are all works in progress to some extent as they are basically an experiment to see what happened if I stuck to some self imposed rules - like never erasing any marks I make. Whilst I still find drawing fun, it has also strangely, become rather stressful... oh dear :-)
