Artist's Description

Ive been taking a break from figure drawing for a while. Because of the way I use the compressed charcoal, my drawings are not editable at all which I find rather stressful, and, whilst the marks are made quickly, they generally progress in a series of fits and starts requiring rather a lot of concentration. Rather a strange way to work, but it was an experiment really to see what emerged!

This first drawing didnt progress at all as planned and I suddenly found myself going off at a tangent from my rough sketch, and whilst I may go back and explore what happened in some more drawings, I left it as it was and post it here as I rather liked the lines, energy and tones produced.

The drawing is done with charcoal and compressed charcoal onto 420 x 594mm Daler Rowney 200g/m2 Fine Grain HeavyWeight paper.

About Paul Davenport

Paul Davenport

I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...
