Title
Shadowtwister Formation
Artist
Paul Davenport
Medium
Drawing - Compressed Charcoal On Paper
Description
Another drawing in the Shadowtwister series, which is a development of my other drawings to explore the possibilities of completely bisecting the page into light and shade, the subject being left to form in the middle where they meet.
I got rather distracted by some of the marks I was making and it ended up being more a study of the formation of the drawing style.
This drawing is slightly larger than I normally do, it was done with conte on 50 x 70 cm Zeichenkarton 220g/m2 drawing paper.

This is amazing work, Paul. Such movement! Congratulations on your lovely work reaching over 500 views! l/f
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Kay :-) I sat for a while thinking of a way to give both figures movement, but it seemed too confusing! - originally the intention was to block in the top right solid black... but I went for a coffee and when I came back, decided I liked it as it was :-) Considering I kind of 'wing it' with these drawings, Im surprised I very rarely feel a need to redo them... which wouldn't actually work, as I have a very limited attention span :-)
Paul Quinn
Incredible! Amazing detail!
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Paul :-) ... maybe deceptive looking at it this size... detail isn't something I was aiming for... thats why I did it using mainly big wads of kitchen towel :-)

Very interesting Paul and nicely done!! v/f/t
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Robert :-) because I don't erase any marks I make, I never really know how these drawings are going to turn out... I find the process rather stressful... but kinda fun!

Maria Hunt
Stunning, Paul... Original and complex presentation Bravo!!! F/L & Voted
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Maria :-) ... very happy you liked the presentation. I really enjoy the process of creating something ~ but never like the finished thing at all as I always feel it falls short of what I was aiming for! I was talking to an artist the other week who felt the opposite... she really hated the process of doing things, but liked what she ended up with... I honestly don't think I would end up doing anything if I felt like that!
Denise Davis
This is wonderful Paul
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Denise... it did vary from my usual A2 drawings, I did start doing it A2, but I couldn't shrink the marks I was making, so had to redraw again bigger.
