This is amazing! So much emotion comes through without even seeing the face.....the pose and the muscles speak so loudly!! :)))vf

You put so much of the human condition in this image Paul. The textured version really brings it to life. This is one of your very finest as far as I am concerned. I can relate to every detail of this work, as it speaks to the immensity of life's struggles and how they can from time to time seem overwhelming in a way that makes one feel like a clenched fist.

beautiful! you have an amazing understanding of how to draw the human body :)

Paul Davenport replied:

Thank you Courtney - thats due mainly to me doing lots of life classes :-) figures and faces do hold a fascination for me though, as our brains are hard wired to some extent to interpret them in ways we don't with other things... I find them intriguing!

Great work, Paul. My first impression is of Gollum tortured by losing his ring in the Hobbit. The image could be translated this way. Good medium.

Paul Davenport replied:

Thank you Mario!... the drawing was actually partly how I was feeling when my parents died... I felt I needed to do something, so it was just a way of letting it out really!

Artist's Description

Recently I have started getting interested in recording the energy of a stroke. These three are A2 in width and are compressed charcoal on heavy cartridge paper. I wanted to use compressed charcoal because you can't rub it out, causing me concentrate on the marks I was making.

This piece was created by taking the 'Frustration' drawing and overlaying it onto a scan of stained and tinted handmade watercolour paper, (the stained paper is predominantly green(ish)) I then applied various layer filters in Photoshop to revise and modify the colour.

I approach this stage as playtime, as it involves experimenting with combinations of filters to produce interesting effects, colours and textures. Tthe results are very often startling and somewhat unexpected.

About Paul Davenport

Paul Davenport

I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...
