Artist's Description

I have started getting interested in making marks that record the energy of the strokes I make. These three drawings are A2 in width using compressed charcoal on heavy cartridge paper. I wanted to use compressed charcoal because you can't rub it out, causing me to concentrate on the marks I was making.

This piece was created by taking the 'Harmony' drawing and overlaying it onto a scan of stained and tinted handmade watercolour paper, (the stained paper is predominantly green(ish)) I then applied various layer filters in Photoshop to revise and modify the colour.

I approach this stage as playtime, as it involves experimenting with combinations of filters to produce interesting effects, colours and textures. The results are very often startling and somewhat unexpected.

About Paul Davenport

Paul Davenport

I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...
