The fourth drawing in the 'Fount' series, which are basically drawings exploring the possibilities of capturing the movement and application of the stroke when describing light and shade, the subject being left to form in the middle where they meet. My figure drawings are usually worked up from small sketches done from life, with an intermediary drawing to work out the shapes and shading.
The drawing is slightly larger than I normally do, it was done with compressed charcoal on 50 x 70 cm Zeichenkarton 220g/m2 drawing paper.
A coloured, textured version can be seen here...

I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...

CAROLE SPANDAU
Paul congrats on your sale!
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Carole :-) Rather fascinates me to know what people do when they buy multiple images - a while ago one person bought prints of all “edge” paintings (of which there are three) + a duplicate of the last one… and did the same with 'alternative edge’ (of which there are three again) + a duplicate this time of the second one… thats 8 full sized prints at over 2 foot square each!!!…... would love to know what they did with them (?)... its a puzzle! - Mostly as that was a buyer in the UK... and houses over here generally are rather tiny :-)

Your figurative drawings are superb, Paul. I worked as an artist's model for many years for many artists and I can say your work is some of the best I have seen.
Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Heidi... very happy you like them:-) Im in two minds about them really... I very much enjoy the process of doing them, but am never satisfied with what I end up with!... love playing with compressed charcoal though :-)... though would be even better if it had an 'undo' button! - I did a bit modelling myself in Ye Olden times (when I could easily see my feet) I always found the 'in-between time' poses (15min) the worst !
