Artist's Description
There is some degree of irony in the fact that Chomsky's comment, which actually inspired the original painting I did, was in fact referring to our limits as humans to perceive things as they truly are - limits of perception etc - as I had no idea on completing the painting, that this 3d image was contained within it! (cool)
This 'Extraction' is a Spherical Depth Map of my 'Consciousness of the Inanimate' oil painting. Ive just started experimenting with Depth Maps and thought thought some of my paintings would produce some interesting effects. Any white plots as '0' and appears as the surface of the sphere, black is theoretically in the centre, and is cut away - everything else is tonaly plotted accordingly.
These Spherical Depth Maps of the 'Consciousness of the Inanimate' painting are all of the same model, viewed from different positions.
The original painting can be seen here

About Paul Davenport
I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...

I am CRAZY about your collection: Extractions/etc..........Fabulous ART unique, f.v.......VIVA
Paul Davenport replied:
Hi VIVA - very happy you like them :-). Rather a peculiar thing to produce really - the 3D model was really making my computer creak! Then I spent ages trying different ways of presenting them, as it's rather nice to see them together with the original paintings as you can see where the shapes came from.... I had them floating over the paintings at one point with a drop shadow, but its confusing without fading the paintings... so decided to just present them as they are... which I find rather unusual :-)

Paul Davenport replied:
Thank you Marcia... the most time consuming thing was lighting it, then rotating it into something funky! :-)
