Contemplation is a charcoal and compressed charcoal drawing applied onto 500 x 500 Zeichenkarton 220g paper. Basically exploring the possibilities of capturing the mood of a moment by the movement and application of the stroke when describing light and shade. My figure drawings are as much about playing with light and shade than the actual figures, which are left to form in the middle where they meet.

My figures are usually worked up from small sketches done from life, with an intermediary drawing to work out the shapes and shading. A timeline of the process can be seen on bechance:-

Ive drawn this model a few times now as I find his relaxed and comfortable attitude seems to show through in the drawings.

I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work.
