I have started getting interested in making marks that record the energy of the strokes I make. These three drawings are A2 in width using compressed charcoal on heavy cartridge paper. I wanted to use compressed charcoal because you can't rub it out, causing me to concentrate on the marks I was making.
This piece was created by taking the 'Harmony' drawing and overlaying it onto a scan of stained and tinted handmade watercolour paper, (the stained paper is predominantly green(ish)) I then applied various layer filters in Photoshop to revise and modify the colour.
I approach this stage as playtime, as it involves experimenting with combinations of filters to produce interesting effects, colours and textures. The results are very often startling and somewhat unexpected.
I started off in fine art, by going to Wakefield School of Art and then St Martins in London to do Sculpture, I have spent most of my time (after going to Camberwell School of Art for a Graphics degree) doing graphic design, working through various sectors including publishing, sales promotion, marketing, and design consultancies, before starting my own company in 1995. I have always to some extent kept up with the fine art - even when this just meant going out sketching with my dad... and its always played a big part in my design work. Most recently though I have being doing rather allot of drawing, re igniting a passion for my long lost love of fine art (or scribbling). From sketching my neighbours little girl, I found myself...
