Description
Recently went on a local walkabout looking for interesting foliage, whilst getting used to a new camera lens. Primarily looking for composition and colour.
This is Heliconia rostrata or also known as hanging lobster claw or false bird of paradise, a native to Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, and naturalized in Puerto Rico.… now photographed in Birmingham - how cool is that!
The large buds are beautiful, but I find the mathematically precise “wiggly” stalk amazing.
Captured with a Nikon D7100 with 18-300 Nikkor lens.

Wow--GORGEOUS color, Paul!!!

A most peculiar thing to come across really when you aren't expecting it... one to two metre long geometrically perfect wiggly stalks hanging down, with these buds - each over a foot in length - all the way down... even more peculiar was people just walking past them without even looking!!! people can be strange! :-)
